An impressive array of award-winning bluegrass talent has been part of Doyle Lawson’s band over the years. This full-bore bluegrass concert will feature Doyle’s current talented lineup and a reunion with several former band members as special guests including Jamie Dailey (of Grand Ole Opry stars Dailey & Vincent), banjo master Terry Baucom (Dukes of Drive), and fiddler Jim Van Cleve (Mountain Heart). As Homecoming attendees have witnessed in the past, it is always a magical experience when amazing artists like these get a chance to share the stage once again and enjoy each other’s company after years apart.
At 6:00 pm the artists will gather on stage to share stories about the impact of Doyle Lawson on bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music, and the experience of being part of one of the most beloved bands in bluegrass history.
The King Center at Southwest Virginia Community College hosts many of the college’s cultural events and houses the Jack Tales Wall, a bas-relief wall sculpture made from over 8,000 bricks that conveys images from the iconic folk tales of the Appalachian Mountains.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
An accomplished mandolin player, vocalist, and producer, Doyle Lawson is the leader of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, an acclaimed bluegrass group with nearly forty albums to its credit. Multiple International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Vocal Group of the Year award winners (most recently in 2018), Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have won and been nominated for numerous Grammy, Dove, IBMA, Inspirational Country Music Association, and Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA) awards. Lawson, a native of Sullivan County, Tennessee, has been named SPBGMA Mandolin Player of the Year, and in 2012 he was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. Lawson began his career in 1963 while still a teenager, joining Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys. Subsequently performing for a few years with banjo player/bandleader J. D. Crowe, Lawson then worked for several years as a member of groundbreaking progressive bluegrass group The Country Gentlemen. In 1979 Lawson ventured out on his own to front Quicksilver. Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver soon established themselves as a leading group in bluegrass gospel music while garnering widespread respect for the group’s exquisite vocal arrangements. Past members of Quicksilver are some of the industry’s biggest names, including the special guests for this concert - Jamie Dailey, Terry Baucom, and Jim Van Cleve. In addition to Lawson (on mandolin and vocals), the current line-up for Quicksilver features Josh Swift (guitar and vocals), Joe Dean (banjo and vocals), Dustin Pyrtle (guitar and vocals), Eli Johnston (bass and vocals), and Stephen Burwell (fiddle and vocals). The group’s most recent album is Life Is A Story, released in 2017. In 2019, the Mountains of Music Homecoming will mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver by hosting three separate concerts commemorating Lawson as well as present-day and key past members of Quicksilver.
