Greasy Bean Cafe

The Greasy Bean Café is found in the Community Center of Abingdon and is one of the first truly authentic, humble Appalachian dining experiences. The recipes used are the traditional recipes passed down from generation to generation of local Appalachian families, and our cooks make every effort to follow them exactly as they were made throughout the history of this humble mountain region. We’ve selected the Greasy Bean as our symbol of humble and authentic Appalachian food. We did so because the Greasy Bean has been tagged as the Cadillac, the Mercedes, the Maserati of the green beans. Greasy Beans, which owe their name to their distinctively shiny, fuzz free pod, were so cherished by early Mountaineers that a bride’s trousseau often included seeds from her family’s unique strain.

Each week our buffet features a special Appalachian dish. Join us every Tuesday night for a buffet dinner and live mountain music!
