Moderated by Jessica Turner, the Director of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, this workshop will explore English-language balladry, an influential music tradition dating back hundreds of years. Three prominent ballad singers--Archie Fisher of Scotland, Sheila Kay Adams of Western North Carolina, and Elizabeth LaPrelle of Southwest Virginia--will discuss balladry's emergence in the Old World and the tradition's reemergence in the New World. These three singers will describe where and how they learned ballads and what those ballads mean to them and to their audiences. Additionally, this workshop will present attendees with a rare opportunity to ask master ballad singers for insights regarding ways to effectively interpret traditional as well as contemporary ballads.
